Leeds Union Events: 53 years of brilliant gigs

10 March 2021

Leeds University Union has seen hundreds of gigs down the years since its inception as a gig venue in the 1960s, playing host to many of the world’s biggest acts – from the Rolling Stones and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Fleetwood Mac and Fatboy Slim. Famously, the Refectory was the backdrop to The Who’s seminal 1970 live album Live at Leeds, cementing the Union’s status as a legendary music venue.

With a raft of performances from iconic acts across the decades,  today the Union continues to be one of Leeds’ premier gig venues, drawing in names including Steve Aoki, Loyle Carner, Sharon Van Etten and Becky Hill in recent years.

To celebrate the Union’s brilliant musical heritage and the cultural history that’s played out at our venues down the years, we’re posting round-ups of some of our biggest gigs by decade – and if you were there, we want to hear from you.

To tell the world what these iconic gigs were like from the crowd, get in touch and share your little piece of music history with the gig-goers of Leeds – and beyond.
